What SEER2 Rating Is Good for an AC?

When it is time to install a new air conditioner, one of the most important factors to consider when selecting a unit is the SEER2 rating. Having an energy-efficient air conditioner will make a huge difference in its efficiency and effectiveness over the 10 to 15 year lifespan.

You can give our team a call when you’re ready to schedule an appointment for AC installation in Sacramento, CA. We can help you select an air conditioner that fits your needs and has great energy efficiency. In the meantime, you can keep reading to learn more about SEER2 and what ratings are considered good.

Minimum SEER2 Ratings

SEER2 replaced the older SEER model early in 2023. SEER2 was designed to offer accountability for real-life factors when measuring the efficiency of using an air conditioning system. The current minimum SEER2 rating for our area is 14.3.

If you are looking at models that were based around the SEER system before updates were made in January 2023, this translates to a 15 on the SEER scale. The minimum SEER2 ratings were increased to offer homeowners a higher accepted minimum for energy efficiency.

Although 14.3 is the minimum acceptable efficiency, we encourage you to select a model with a higher rating on the scale, if at all possible. The higher the efficiency of an air conditioner, the less energy it has to consume for cooling.

Benefits of Boosted Efficiency

A more efficient air conditioner lowers your overall energy costs. Just think, you could install a more efficient air conditioner and save 10% or more on your cooling costs. If you spend $100 per month for cooling, that totals $10 per month. While $120 per year doesn’t seem like a lot, over a 10 to 15 year period, you could save $1,200-$1,800, if not more.

But there’s also another added benefit. Air conditioners that are more efficient don’t have to work as hard to cool your home. As a result, they take on less wear and tear and may face fewer repair needs. We still encourage you to schedule regular maintenance for your high-efficiency air conditioner, but you’ll likely spend less on repairs over the life of the unit. Plus, reducing the wear and tear helps your air conditioner or heat pump to last longer.
