Sounds Your AC Should Never Make

tech-servicing-air-conditioner

You know what your air conditioner is supposed to sound like when you turn it on. Most of the time, it shouldn’t sound like anything; you hear the noise of it groaning to life, then it’s quiet. All you hear is the sound of air blowing from the vents after the compressor kicks on.

So what happens when abnormal sounds occur, and they don’t stop? It usually points to the need for AC repair in Rancho Cordova, CA. Don’t fret: before you pick up the phone and call for repairs, let’s see if your AC is making any of the following noises and explain what they mean.

Banging Sounds

Metal expands and retracts. When it does, you hear some banging sounds from time to time. This could be nothing, but if banging sounds persist, it points to a different issue.

There’s a list of potential problems that could show banging sounds as a symptom. It’s best to have a professional technician diagnose the issue. It’s recommended to stop AC operations until they can be examined.

Light Buzzing or Humming

Buzzing sounds normally come from the motor. You could be facing a failing condenser fan, the isolation feet could need adjustments, or your compressor could be showing signs of an early death. This sound can also happen when your coils freeze up.

If your coils do freeze and your AC attempts to run anyway, it can cause long-term damage to your unit. This requires you to power down your AC and let it thaw, but that alone doesn’t solve the problem. You need a technician to check for damages and find out exactly what’s causing it.

Unending Clicking Noise

It’s okay to hear a clicking sound when you turn your thermostat down and it sends a signal to your air conditioner to turn on. It’s completely normal. It’s when that sound doesn’t stop that you have a problem.

Continuous clicking noises point to an issue with the capacitor. It could face failure, or there may be an electrical problem that doesn’t present itself as buzzing or humming like we mentioned earlier.

Screeching or Squealing Sound

Light squealing is a sign that there’s something wrong with your air conditioner’s internal pressure. This could be in a variety of areas, although most of the time it ends up having to do with the fan motor.

If your fan motor’s bearings are dry, the metal-on-metal sound will steadily increase until it’s very noticeable. This indicates that you either need more consistent maintenance or that there’s internal damage and you need a repair specialist as soon as possible.

Is Your AC in Need of Repair?

If your air conditioner is giving you trouble and the noises won’t stop, it’s time to call for repair. These noises can escalate into bigger problems (or there may already be large problems that point toward a breakdown). It’s not something you should wait to tend to.
